ASL Interpreter Information

Exciting Interpreting Opportunity for Student Interpreters!

The Windsor Mountain ASL department is excited to continue their partnership with the University of Southern Maine summer 2009, and offer our 5 ½ week intensive interpreting program. This program is designed for both working educational interpreters looking to further their skills, and ASL students who are interested in becoming interpreters and need hands on experience. It is a fantastic ‘gap’ program for interpreters who have recently graduated, but need real world experience before moving on into professional interpreting. You will be able to practice your skills in a completely safe, supportive environment, working with Deaf staff and children, and being able to observe, team, and stretch your abilities while meeting staff members from around the world, trying new things, and having a wonderful time. Please note that this is an unpaid internship.

Examples of interpreting situations:

•  Full staff meetings
•  One on one meetings with staff and coordinators
•  Counselor/camper interaction between Deaf/Hearing
•  Active classes such as soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, sailing, archery, dance, yoga, ropes course, running, etc.
•  Arts classes such as arts and crafts, painting, costume making, pottery, woodwork, stained glass, jewelry making, etc.
•  Theatrical productions and music.
•  Camper to camper interactions
•  And more…

Nuts and Bolts:

This is a 3-credit class. We do not offer paid internships. Students must apply and pass a two-part application process; both an ASL/Interpreting skill screening, and an aptitude screening.  There are a limited number of positions available. Due to funding limitations, we cannot offer the program without participation in the class.  Unfortunately, we do not have scholarships or financial aid available at this time. We encourage you to seek financial aid from your University summer session office.

The credits are transferable. Most students discuss with their advisor how to apply the credits to their program. Curriculum is available on request.

Practicum students are on camp from July 14th to August 22nd. This includes a week and a half of orientation. Each student is allowed a 3 day off chunk (assigned) and 2 evenings a week. Students must be willing to commit to this entire interval. Some flexibility is allowed for previous commitments, per the department heads discretion.

In state (Maine) tuition is $654, plus $250 room and board fee.

Out of state tuition is $1806, plus $250 room and board fee.

Professional Development non-credit Option is $645, plus $250 room and board fee.

Tuition can be paid directly to the University of Southern Maine.
Contact the billing department at http://usm.maine.edu/buso/paymethod.htm with any questions about payment. The camp room and board fee of $250 can be paid directly to Windsor Mountain International Summer Camp. This will cover food and lodging for the entire 5 ½ weeks.

Students are responsible for their own transportation to NH. We can arrange transportation to camp from local bus/train stations and airports.

There is a $25 application processing fee, and applicants must pass a background screening, and submit a health form.

"I wanted to thank you and the whole staff of Windsor Mountain for watching over Acacia so well. I was very impressed by the feeling of community I felt on Visiting Day.  The connection of your family to the camp and the wonderful, warm energy you bring to your work was very apparent. Acacia sings the Hello Song all the time.  She is proud of how much sign language she learned." ...camp parent
