WINDSOR MOUNTAIN INTERNATIONAL ~ GLOBE NEWS ~ FEBRUARY 2008 Vol. 23 No.1 www.WindsorMountain.org

“Camp was an incredibly positive experience for our son.  He came back to us a more confident, even sweeter child, with improved communication skills.
It is still amazing to us the difference that one month made for him.  We know that he will always remember his time at Windsor Mountain and the wonderful people he met.  Thank you!”

Harlem Link School
This past summer we hosted a group of boys and girls from NYC’s Harlem Link School.  These 6 students joined our summer session for 2 weeks and got involved in every facet of camp life.  They are planning to come back again this summer because they want to spend more time swimming, boating, playing, making music and art, and most of all, making new friends and connections, particularly with Mother Earth!  A huge THANK YOU is due to all the families who have supported our Educational Opportunities Fund to help make connections like this possible.  You can see how much fun they  had and as we continue to host Harlem Link season after season, the impact will surely be significant.

$46,000 Raised to Date for the Educational Opportunities Fund ~

The Educational Opportunities Fund is making waves! We are delighted to share that we succeeded in earning our matching grant this fall.  Funds raised from families and friends, matched by Windsor Mountain, has brought our financial aid pot for this coming summer to $46,000.  Thank you for being a part of this effort and congratulations to everyone involved!  We are inspired by all of your support and hope that more families, friends and alumni will be inspired to join in the giving.

Our goal for the season is to raise $110,000. Please let us know if you have further fundraising ideas. We need to keep the momentum going!

The most recent suggestion was to launch a silent auction…and so we are going to do this.  Perhaps you have a vacation home you would offer up for a weekend, a pair of Yankees, Red Sox or even Symphony tickets you don’t anticipate using, or perhaps you are an artist with something to contribute to the auction?...  Get creative.  Get on board.  Please send me an e-mail if you think of something you could contribute, or if you'd like to help organize this project.  As soon as we have a critical mass of goodies, we’ll launch!

And please remember, many companies have Employees Matching Gift programs, so if you are in a position to make a straight cash contribution, be sure to ask your employers if they have a program to match your donation.  We look forward to continued progress!

~ Danny’s marathon fundraiser was exciting, and he is training to run again next fall. He wants to double his earnings and continue to shave minutes off his already impressive speed (2:55).  Our matching grant campaign was fantastic, and we would love to hear other ideas you may have.  A silent auction is on the slate for next fall.  Do you have a vacation home you would auction off for a weekend?  Let’s get creative and have fun with this.  Our efforts will help our camp community include a more diverse camper community which will bring joy to everyone involved.  We look forward to hearing back from you.

A Huge Thank You!

We are grateful for the ongoing support of our Windsor Mountain community. Here are a few Thank-You’s we would like to “Shout Out”

This has been our second season of hosting “Tea Parties” to bring together new families and share the Windsor Mountain spirit.  Generous families have invited friends and members of their communities into their homes and welcomed us to come and give a slide show presentation.  We have had excellent turn outs and we want to thank the families who have hosted as well as those who have offered:  The MacFadden-Lewkowiczs, the Menand-Abrams, the Goldsmiths, the Lofchies, the Youngers, the Mazers, the Lasdons, the Karmans, the Gareys and the Abrams.  Please let us know if you would like to join the party making team and host.  We would love to hear from you.

On the Travel side of things:

Adam Aronovitz and Jen Xu have been working hard to send us new potential leaders.  This is key to helping us build our leadership team!

Jim Whitmore, Sarah Foster, Dianna Hahn, Carl Siegel, Eli Avery and Katie Colby are working diligently to help us set up our incredible travel programs.

Katie Colby is also busy helping us create travel programs for schools.  (If you know of a school that would like to send a group on the road and might benefit from partnering with Windsor Mountain, please let Katie know!)

With respect to the Summer Camp:

Kate Berge, Rachel Singer, Sarah Young and Travis Rubury have helped us with administrative work during their academic calendars.

And thanks to the  staff who came ice skating in NYC and helped supervise the campers: Zoe Rappaport, Adam Tepper, Fernanda Perez, Leia DeSousa and Ranju Mendes

Also, a critical thanks to our NYC hosts Leia, Tom and Laura.

We appreciate you!!

Camp Cookbook~
coming soon!

Head Chef Jackie representing Jamaica on International Day

When you think of camp food, what comes to mind?  If you’re a Windsor Mountain camper or staff member some of the first words you choose to describe your summer meals are delicious and home cooked.  Then you probably start naming your favorite camp foods – the fresh dinner rolls, chicken and artichoke, beef pulgogi, stuffed peppers, burritos, stir fry…the list could go on and on.  If you’re the parent of a Windsor Mountain camper you have probably heard at least one request for a camp meal after your child has returned home – even the pickiest eaters love Jackie’s cooking.  Have you ever wondered where to find the recipes for the much loved camp dishes?  Soon you will not need to look any further than your own kitchen.  Thanks to the hard work of one camp family many of the frequently requested recipes will be sized down for a family of 4 and available in the brand new Windsor Mountain cook book.  Taking a recipe meant to feed 300 people and cutting it down to a single family serving is no small task and we want to send a big THANK YOU to Sarah and Nate MacFadden and their mom Cory who have pioneered the project.  They have been working on the recipes since the fall and we hope to have the cook books available in the camp store this summer.  It was also Cory’s idea for proceeds from the sales to benefit Windsor Mountain’s scholarship fund so more kids can experience a Windsor Mountain summer.  Keep your eyes (or maybe your nose) out for the cookbook this spring!
